Jumpstart for Reading

On Tuesday, December 9, prekindergarten and kindergarten students will have an opportunity to listen to “guests” read the story Corduroy by Don Freeman. To make this event special, prekinder and kinder students may bring their teddy bear or favorite stuffed animal to school on that day.

The shared reading experience will encourage our students to become readers and lifelong learners and instill in them the fact that school and learning is satisfying.

This is an HISD initiative with the Pearson Foundation for Jumpstart’s Read for the Record, a national campaign that helps break the cycle of illiteracy by raising public awareness about the importance of early childhood literacy skills and reading to children.

Online Resources VS Google

Some answers to your questions about Online Resources:

What are Online Resources?

HISD online databases are subscription databases paid for by the district each year to help support research and provide information to students, teachers and parents. Resources include: journal/magazine articles, encyclopedias, e-books, test preparation materials, primary sources documents, timelines, recommended educational websites, streaming video and many other types of resources.

How can I access the HISD Online Resources?

They are available 24/7 from school or home. Go to http://www.hisdlibraryservices.org and click on the yellow link to HISD Online Resources. Click on the icons to access resources from school or home.
There are also several links to the HISD Online Resources on the HISD portal. Bookmark the site on each computer you use for research.

Why not just “Google it”?

Although the Internet is full of wonderful information, it can be overwhelming and confusing for young researchers. Users need to evaluate websites and look for bias or points of view. Ask questions like: Is this a personal website or a commercial one? Who created the website?
Contrary to popular folklore, all information is not on the web. Some of the “best” and most authoritative information is on the invisible web and that is the world of online subscription databases.
Part of the college bound culture is for students to use this type of resource well.
